Circus Caper is a side scrolling action game for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by Advance Communication Company and published by Toho in 1989. It opens with one of the kinder setups on the console: a big circus comes to the city where Tim and his sister Judy live, the pair can afford only one ticket, and Tim gives it to her. When Judy never appears at the exit, Mr. Magic, the boss of the circus, looms up and tells the boy to give up on his sister. Circus Caper is the story of Tim refusing to do that.
Play takes Tim through the circus in search of the key to the tent where Judy is confined. Wicked clowns, tightrope artists and ferocious animals come at him from every direction, and he answers with the contents of a boy's pockets: a yoyo, a hammer and a soccer ball, each with its own reach and rhythm. This is a single player adventure, built on learning the habits of each performer and picking the right tool for the job before pressing on to the next stretch of the show.
Circus Caper has aged into a cult favorite. The art is bright and a little unsettling, the music sticks with you, and the difficulty is firm enough that finishing it still means something. Collectors look for it as one of the few games Toho put out on the Nintendo Entertainment System, and as a rare case of a circus setting carried across a whole adventure rather than a single stage. If you like action platformers with personality, Circus Caper belongs in the stack.
