City Connection - for NES

City Connection puts you behind the wheel of a little car with a very big journey ahead of it. First an arcade game from Jaleco, it came to the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988 in a conversion by Hect, and it remains one of the console's most distinctive mixes of platforming and driving. The mission is to race your speed demon car from New York to Tokyo in record time, with the cops and the enemy on your tail, ambushing you at every turn, pushing you off the road and leaping into your path.

Each city is a set of stacked roadways, and the way forward is to cover every stretch of highway before you can hit the next stop. Your car leaps between levels of the road, and the oil cans you collect along the way become your arsenal, fired off to knock pursuers out and rack up more points. The pressure comes from the layout as much as the chases, since the last untouched piece of road is usually the hardest to reach safely. A second player can take a turn at the wheel, trading off attempts city by city.

City Connection is remembered for its charm: the chirpy soundtrack, the cartoon cityscapes and the pleasing moment when a stage falls into place as the final road lights up. It is easy to pick up, hard to master and perfect for short sessions, which is exactly why it still gets pulled off the shelf. For collectors, City Connection is a key Jaleco title on the Nintendo Entertainment System and one of the better arcade conversions of its era, a cartridge that looks and sounds like nothing else in the library.
