Clash at Demonhead is an open ended action platformer developed and published by Vic Tokai in 1989 for the Nintendo Entertainment System. You play Billy Big Bang Blitz, who starts out with a handgun and not much else and can run, jump and shoot his way through a sprawling region of roads and encounters. What makes Clash at Demonhead stand out is its structure: instead of a straight line of stages, it hands you a world map of connected routes and leaves it to you to work out where to go next.
Billy's basic moves are simple, and the game grows outward from them. Upgrades can be bought from a shop, while collecting Force unlocks powers that change how you travel and fight, including shrinking, flight, healing, invincibility and teleportation back to areas you have already visited. The map holds over forty routes, and finishing the game means meeting a set of objectives rather than simply reaching the end of a level. Bosses, conversations and dead ends all feed back into the same question of where to try next.
Players still love Clash at Demonhead for its tone and its freedom. It is talkative and funny in a way that was rare on the system, generous with secrets, and open enough that two people can finish it having taken quite different paths. Collectors know it as one of the standout Vic Tokai releases and as an early example of exploration driven design that later became commonplace, which keeps Clash at Demonhead near the top of many Nintendo Entertainment System want lists.
