Clu Clu Land - for NES

Clu Clu Land is one of the earliest Nintendo Entertainment System games, built by Nintendo R&D1 and published by Nintendo in 1984. It is a maze game with a mystery at its center: the evil Sea Urchin has hidden all the gold of Clu Clu Land in an underground maze, and it falls to you to find it before time runs out. Very few games on the console look or move like this one, which is a large part of why Clu Clu Land has stayed memorable for more than forty years.

You glide constantly, steering by catching the posts in the maze and swinging around them, which turns plain movement into a skill of its own. Uncovering the gold as you sweep across the floor is the job, and the Sea Urchin spends the whole time trying to stop you with traps, from a house that swallows you alive to a rubber trap that lands you flat on your back. You can fire electric shockwaves to stun him and buy yourself some room, and clearing a maze leads into an exciting bonus round. Play alone or bring a friend along.

Clu Clu Land is loved for how unusual it feels. The momentum and the post catching give it a rhythm nothing else quite copies, the timer keeps every round tight, and chasing a better score pulls you straight back in. It is also a genuine piece of Nintendo history, an early design from the R&D1 team that went on to shape so much of the company's output. A Clu Clu Land cartridge is a cornerstone of any Nintendo Entertainment System collection and still one of the best two player time wasters on the shelf.
