Club Penguin: Elite Penguin Force brought Disney's snow covered Club Penguin world to Nintendo DS for the first time in 2008. Developed by 1st Playable Productions and published by Disney Interactive Studios, it hands players a badge rather than just a sled: you join the Elite Penguin Force as a secret agent, investigating strange events around the island. For anyone who grew up waddling around Club Penguin, Elite Penguin Force is the version of that world you can hold in your hands.
Play is a mix of adventure and minigames. Missions take you across familiar island locations with gadgets, accessories, disguises and vehicles, solving mysteries and puzzling your way through conversations with the cast. Alongside the story there are minigames made for the DS, including Snowboarding and Dance Challenge, plus favorites like Cart Surfer, Jet Pack Adventure and Ice Fishing, rebuilt around the stylus and the two screens. Coins you earn while playing go toward gear, and when the game was new those coins could travel wirelessly into the wider Club Penguin world.
What keeps Club Penguin: Elite Penguin Force on people's minds is affection for the island itself. The wider Club Penguin world has since closed its doors, so this cartridge is one of the few places left where you can wander the snow, meet the penguins and run an agent's errands. It is gentle, charming and aimed squarely at younger players, which makes it a lovely thing to share. For collectors of Disney games or Nintendo DS oddities, Elite Penguin Force has quietly become one to look for.
