Cobra Command is a helicopter shooter that Data East developed and published for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988. The setup is pure arcade bravado: the most advanced Cobra attack helicopter ever built is placed under your command, and you fly it alone into a deadly no man's land. What gives Cobra Command its character is the pressure of that solo mission, with enemy choppers, tanks, soldiers, cannons and warships all aiming to blast you out of the sky at once.
Play is built around a single player campaign of flight and firepower. You guide your helicopter across hostile territory, picking your targets as threats arrive from the ground, the water and the air, and the fight runs from open sky to heavily fortified positions. Helpless hostages are counting on you along the way, so Cobra Command asks you to weigh rescue work against your own survival as you make your way toward enemy headquarters for the final assault.
Players keep coming back to Cobra Command because it is direct and demanding in the way the best late 1980s shooters were: learn the attack patterns, keep moving, and take your rescues where you can find them. It also sits in an interesting corner of the Data East catalogue, a company whose Nintendo Entertainment System output collectors enjoy tracking down. For anyone building a shelf of NES shooters, Cobra Command is a satisfying addition, easy to pick up for a quick run and stubborn enough to keep you honest.
