Conan - for NES

Conan is an action platformer for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by System 3 Software and published by Mindscape in 1991. It casts you as the great and mighty Conan, born of pure Cimmerian blood, in an age unheard of where barbarous kingdoms battle for survival in a savage and unforgiving land, and it sends you after what must be yours: the throne of Aquilonia. Conan brings one of fantasy's most famous heroes to the console with a suitably dark and heavy atmosphere.

The game is built as a journey across the Hyborian world, carrying you from the Forests of Asgard to the Tombs of Zamboula over a series of action stages. You fight with blade in hand as flying demons assault you and fiendish spirits lash out, and a nymph arrives to challenge you, leaving Conan to tell the difference between a subtle temptress and a menacing foe. It is a single player adventure with enemies and challenges at every turn, and the journey is a dangerous one from the first screen.

Conan holds a real place in the affections of players who grew up on sword and sorcery: it is tough, it looks the part, and it commits completely to its world rather than borrowing a famous name and stopping there. System 3 Software gave it a feel distinct from the console's other action platformers, which is part of why it still gets talked about. For collectors, Conan is a later Nintendo Entertainment System release and a rewarding one to track down, both as a piece of Conan history and as a game that still asks something of you.
