Conflict is a war game developed and published by Vic Tokai for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1989. It puts you in the role of a three star general who must accompany his troops all the way to the ultimate victory, moving units across a battlefield laid out on a grid of hexes. Conflict belongs to a small group of serious strategy titles on the console, and it did well enough to earn a sequel on the Super NES titled Super Conflict.
You command the Western Bloc, while the Eastern Bloc is run either by the computer or by a second player. Victory points are the measure of everything: you earn or lose them by occupying cities and destroying units of the opponent's army, so every advance is a calculation about what a position is worth. The hex map rewards patience, placement and knowing when to commit your strength, and the two player option turns Conflict into a long contest across the couch rather than a quick skirmish.
Players still enjoy Conflict because strategy is a small field on the Nintendo Entertainment System and this one takes itself seriously, asking for thought rather than reflexes. A session lasts as long as you want it to, and the second player option gives the cartridge a long life. Collectors tend to notice Conflict for the same reason: it is a Vic Tokai strategy release sitting among shelves of action games, and it makes an NES collection look broader and more considered than one built on shooters alone.
