Contra - Hard Corps - for Genesis

Contra: Hard Corps is Konami's Sega Genesis entry in the run and gun series, released in 1994 and set five years after Contra III: The Alien Wars. A special task force is formed to deal with lingering alien threats and rogue military factions, and when a city comes under attack the elite Hard Corps unit is sent in: commandos Ray Poward and Sheena Etranzi, the cyborg Brad Fang and the combat robot Browny. Behind the chaos is Colonel Bahamut, a former government scientist who has stolen a powerful alien cell capable of creating devastating bio organic weapons.

You pick one of the four, each with a weapon set of their own, and fight through side view stages on foot, with certain sections spent riding the Motoroid, a hoverbike that transforms into an ostrich like robot. Unlike earlier Contra games, which mixed in overhead segments, Hard Corps keeps the side view perspective throughout, and it advances its story through cutscenes, with decisions at certain points sending you down different routes. Bosses arrive constantly and change shape as you wear them down. Two players can take it on together.

Contra: Hard Corps has a reputation and it is thoroughly earned: ferociously hard, generous with spectacle, and relentless in a way that makes every cleared stage feel like a story worth telling. The four playable characters and the branching routes give it more replay value than almost anything else in the series, and the boss designs are still held up as some of the finest in the genre. For collectors it is a standout Genesis cartridge, a Konami high point and the game people reach for when they argue the system could outmuscle anything.
