Contra - for NES

Contra is a run and gun action game developed and published by Konami for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988, and it remains one of the defining cartridges of the system. The universe teeters on the brink of total annihilation at the hands of the vile alien warmonger Red Falcon, and Earth's only hope is a courageous member of an elite commando squad. Contra sends you deep into the Amazon jungle, where Red Falcon and his galactic henchmen have turned ancient Mayan temples into monuments dedicated to mass destruction. Few games of the era hit this hard, this fast.

You run, jump and shoot in eight directions, grabbing a multitude of weapons along the way: rapid fire machine guns, spread shots, flame and high tech lasers, each of them lost the moment you are hit, because a single bullet ends a life. Stages alternate between side scrolling jungle, tropical forest ringed by giant waterfalls and alien cannons, and underground security systems shown as 3D mazes that place the camera behind your shoulder. Two players can fight through the whole campaign at the same time, and the famous Konami button sequence at the title screen offers a little mercy.

Players still love Contra because it rewards memory and nerve in equal measure. Every screen can be learned, every boss has a pattern, and clearing the last base with a friend beside you is one of the great shared victories of 8 bit gaming. The music is pure Konami swagger, the simultaneous two player action is among the best on the console, and the challenge is firm without ever feeling unfair. For collectors, Contra is a cornerstone: short, perfectly tuned, instantly playable by anyone, and a title that makes a Nintendo Entertainment System shelf feel complete.
