CrossFire is a helicopter action game released for the Sega Genesis in 1991, developed by Kyugo and published by Kyugo Trading. You fly into hostile territory to free hostages, with a payday waiting on the other side of the job. What sets CrossFire apart from the many shooters on the system is its structure: instead of one long scrolling battle, it splits each operation into separate stages that change how you play, including a stretch where you leave the cockpit altogether.
You choose where to go: Guatemala, Cuba or Panama. Every mission then runs in three parts. First you take the helicopter into open country and clear out whatever comes at you. Next you push a stronger helicopter into the enemy base itself. Finally you land, take control of a soldier on foot, and fight through the base to reach the hostages. On the ground you can call the helicopter in for support, but only a limited number of times, so deciding when to spend that help carries real weight. CrossFire is a game for one player.
Players keep coming back to CrossFire for the change of pace between the air and the ground, and for the rough edges that give games of this vintage their character, right down to the misspelled country name on the map screen. It is a shooter that asks for a little patience and pays it back. For collectors, CrossFire sits in one of the quieter corners of the Genesis library, the sort of title that rarely comes up in conversation and surprises people when it turns up on a shelf. If you are filling out a run of Genesis shooters, this one is worth having.
