Crystalis - for NES

Crystalis is an action role playing game developed and published by SNK for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, and one of the most admired adventures on the console. October 1st, 1997 is known as End Day: a great war encircles the globe and brings an end to civilization. The surviving humans concluded that they could never repeat their mistakes and built a great tower in the sky to watch over the world and combat evil. One hundred years later, a hidden cryogenic chamber in the mountains springs to life, and Crystalis begins with a hero who remembers nothing.

Crystalis is played from an overhead view with real time sword fighting rather than menu battles. The hero can equip weapons, armour, shields and globes or bracelets, plus a single item from his inventory for use in the field, and four wise people gradually teach him offensive and healing magic that draws on MP. Swords can be charged for heavier strikes, and the elemental blades you gather open new ground as often as they win fights. Towns, dungeons and a wide world map connect into one long journey toward the tower and the mystery waiting at the top of it.

Players still rank Crystalis among the very best action role playing games on the Nintendo Entertainment System. The science fiction setting gives it a tone no other 8 bit adventure quite matches, the soundtrack is a long standing favourite, and the mix of free exploration and quick, responsive combat has aged remarkably well. It is a single player game people finish and then start over. For collectors, Crystalis is essential: SNK's best known work on Nintendo's console, a bridge between pure action and full role playing, and a cartridge that newcomers and veterans both end up recommending.
