Déjà Vu - for NES

Déjà Vu is an adventure game developed and published by Kemco for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, and it opens with one of the best setups on the console. You wake up on the floor of a seedy Chicago casino with no idea who you are or how you got there, and the only company is a body that looks somewhat familiar and is very definitely dead. You have to work out who you are and who iced this guy, and you have to do it in a hurry, because otherwise the police will peg you for Murder One. In Déjà Vu, what you do not know can kill you.

This is a game of looking, opening and thinking rather than jumping and shooting. You move a cursor around each scene and choose from a set of commands to examine, take, open, operate and speak, building a picture of the night out of matchbooks, paperwork and whatever turns up in your pockets. Items matter, the order you do things in matters, and time keeps moving with every action you take. There is no combat to fall back on, only observation and nerve. It is a single player mystery, and it is quite possible to get yourself killed by being careless, which only sharpens the mood.

Déjà Vu endures because its hard boiled tone is done so well, all rain slicked streets and wisecracks, and because solving it feels like real detective work rather than pattern matching. It was an unusual thing to put on a console at the time, and it still reads as fresh for anyone who likes a mystery. For collectors, Déjà Vu is one of the standout adventure games on the Nintendo Entertainment System and an easy recommendation for a shelf already full of platformers, a cartridge best played late at night with the lights down low.
