Dashin' Desperadoes - for Genesis

Dashin' Desperadoes is a racing platform game developed and published by Data East for the Sega Genesis in 1993. Will and Rick were the best of friends until Jenny came to town, and the two cowboys have competed over everything since. When Jenny is given a trip around the world for her birthday, both of them are determined to come along as her bodyguard. What makes Dashin' Desperadoes stand out is the split screen: this is a platform game built from the ground up as a head to head race.

Both racers run the same course at the same time, each on half of the screen, so you can always see exactly how far ahead or behind you are. The courses travel from Southwestern deserts to Arctic icebergs, through shark filled seas and haunted ruins, each one laid out with shortcuts, hazards and plenty of places to lose your footing. Bombs and other items let you make life difficult for your rival, so a lead is never safe for long. You can race the computer, but Dashin' Desperadoes is made for two players sitting side by side.

The appeal has not faded: very few games put two people inside the same platform level at once and let them watch each other sweat. Races are short, comebacks are common, and the cartoon presentation keeps things light even when the finish is close. Collectors prize Dashin' Desperadoes as one of Data East's later Genesis releases and a genuinely uncommon one, and it is a reliable hit whenever a group is passing controllers around. If you keep a few games ready for visitors, this one earns its place.
