Day Dreamin' Davey is an action adventure game for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by Sculptured Software and published by HAL Laboratory in 1992. It begins with one of the most relatable openings on the console: Davey arrives at school, and a bully named Lumpy takes his pencil. Class starts, Davey's attention drifts, and the game follows him out of the classroom and into his head. That framing is what makes Day Dreamin' Davey memorable, a children's adventure where the fantasy is openly a daydream and the whole thing started with a stolen pencil.
The daydreams carry Davey into three settings, Medieval Times, the Wild West and Ancient Greece, each with its own look, enemies and hazards. Play moves between exploring, working out small problems and fighting with whatever the setting hands you, and the structure rewards curiosity more than speed. Every level closes with something Davey must collect, and those prizes always resemble the shapes of school items: a pencil, a ruler, a trophy. It is a single player game, comfortable to play in sittings, and the shifting themes keep the pace from settling into one rhythm for long.
People remember Day Dreamin' Davey fondly because it is strange in a gentle, likeable way, with an idea at its centre that almost no other game of the era tried. The daydream structure gives the variety a reason to exist, and the classroom bookends still raise a smile. Collectors value it as a HAL Laboratory published NES title from the end of the system's life, when print runs were smaller and attention had moved on to the Super Nintendo, and as a good look at Sculptured Software before the studio became better known for its 16 bit work. It is an easy cartridge to recommend to anyone building a collection of overlooked NES adventures.
