Deadly Arts is a one on one fighting game for the Nintendo 64, developed by Konami Computer Entertainment Osaka and published by Konami in 1998. It is known in Japan and Europe as G.A.S.P!! Fighters' NEXTream, which gives Deadly Arts a double identity that collectors tend to enjoy. Rather than a polished martial arts spectacle, Konami aimed for something rougher: a low down and dirty street fighting tournament, presented as the most intense combat simulation the team could build for the console.
Walk into the arena, take a bow, and the fighting begins. More than nine controllable fighters are yours to command, each carrying an arsenal of face smashing punches, kicks and throws to learn, time and string together. Deadly Arts is built for two players, so the tournament works as a solo climb through the roster or as a contest between friends on the same couch. The cartridge also supports the Rumble Pak, and this is where Deadly Arts earns its reputation: every kick, punch and throw that lands sends a jolt straight through the controller.
The Nintendo 64 never had a crowded fighting shelf, and that is a large part of why Deadly Arts still has a following. It is a product of its moment, when teams were working out how fighters should feel in three dimensions, and playing it now is a genuinely interesting trip back to that experimental era. For collectors, Deadly Arts is one of the quieter Konami titles of the generation, not a household name but a real piece of Nintendo 64 fighting history, and a cartridge that always sparks conversation when it turns up in a collection.
