Death Duel - for Genesis

Death Duel is one of the odder shooters on the Sega Genesis, and that is meant as a compliment. Developed by Punk Development and published by RazorSoft in 1992, it casts you as Jade in a series of battles fought one against one, each under a strict time limit. Rather than send waves of enemies at you, Death Duel gives you a single opponent at a time and asks you to take it apart. The presentation is loud and the premise is simple, but the fights themselves are far more tactical than the genre usually allows.

Preparation matters as much as aim. Before a battle you spend your Pheelae on repairs and choose which weapons to carry, and since only three can be held at once, every loadout is a decision. Missiles, rockets, a machine gun and grenades that slow an opponent down all have their uses, because each enemy has specific weaknesses and will duck behind walls on the battlefield to protect them. Targeting the right part with the right weapon before your time and ammunition run out is the whole game. Between missions, short gallery shooting rounds let you earn extra money.

Players remember Death Duel for its mix of brute spectacle and real thinking. A ticking clock, a limited arsenal and an enemy who hides turn each round into a small puzzle, and a win feels earned. It is also a distinctive piece of Genesis history, a single player cartridge from a publisher with a short and unusual catalogue, and it does not look or play like anything else on the system. For collectors who prize the strange and the specific, Death Duel is a fine thing to have on the shelf.
