DemiKids - Light Version - for GBA

DemiKids: Light Version is a role playing game for the Game Boy Advance, developed by Multimedia Intelligence Transfer and published by Atlus in 2003. The year is 200X, and Jin, Akira and Lena are sixth grade friends and members of the Mystery Club, a group devoted to tracking down anything strange. Poking around the school library, they find a book full of spells and incantations, and curiosity gets the better of them. The ritual they attempt calls up an evil demon, and help arrives from a peculiar new student named Amy, who hands Jin and Akira a gun shaped tool called the Demiloc.

The Demiloc lets the boys capture and summon demons, and that is the engine of DemiKids: Light Version. Battles are turn based, fought with a party of recruited demons, and the two guardian demons sent to protect the group, Rand and Gale, join the cast early on. Demons can be combined into stronger ones, so the roster you build comes partly from experimentation and partly from whichever creatures you happen to meet. The game also has a companion release, DemiKids: Dark Version, and a link cable lets two players connect for battling and trading, which makes some demons easier to find if you have a friend with the other version.

DemiKids: Light Version holds a particular spot in the Atlus catalog: it belongs to the wider Megami Tensei family, aimed at a younger audience, with a bright art style and a cheerful tone wrapped around demon collecting and fusion. Players still enjoy it for that mix of schoolyard adventure and surprisingly deep party building. For collectors, DemiKids: Light Version is a less common Game Boy Advance role playing game and a natural pairing with the Dark Version on the same shelf.
