Devilish - The Next Possession - for Genesis

Devilish: The Next Possession takes the old idea of bouncing a ball against a wall of bricks and rebuilds it for the Sega Genesis. Developed by Genki and published by Sage's Creation in 1992, it hands you two paddles instead of one, and that changes the whole shape of the game. Devilish is a paddle game that behaves more like an action title, with the field climbing upward as you break through and a boss waiting at the top of every stage. Few games in this style have ever played quite like it.

The lower paddle does the job you expect: keep the ball from dropping off the bottom of the screen. The upper paddle is where Devilish: The Next Possession becomes something new. It moves and turns, letting you strike the ball from different angles and from different parts of the screen, so you can steer a shot into a cluster of bricks or catch an enemy you could never have reached otherwise. Levels are cleared by destroying bricks and enemies as you advance upward, and then the stage boss appears. A second player can join, making the two paddles a shared responsibility.

Devilish still has a following because its central twist is genuinely clever, and because it asks for a kind of spatial thinking that ordinary paddle games never do. Once the two paddles start to feel natural, it is hard to go back. It is also a fairly quiet corner of the Genesis library, an action cartridge that rarely comes up in conversation and almost always surprises the people who try it. For collectors looking past the obvious shelf of Genesis classics, Devilish: The Next Possession is a smart and welcome addition.
