Dick Tracy - for NES

Dick Tracy brings the world famous comic strip detective to the Nintendo Entertainment System in a game developed by Realtime Associates and published by Bandai America in 1990, following the blockbuster movie. You grab that famous hat and coat and hit the streets in search of Big Boy Caprice and his gang. Big Boy, Flattop, Pruneface and The Brow are at the Ritz planning their next assault on the city, and Dick Tracy arrives only to find the gang has made a break for it. What stands out is the tone: this is a crime story first, with fists and gunfire as the consequence rather than the whole point.

Dick Tracy mixes action with legwork. You follow leads around the city, take the car to the places they point to, and then fight your way through the mobsters waiting at the other end. The street scenes are viewed from the side, with thugs closing in from both directions, so you learn to use your fists at close quarters and keep the pistol for trouble further off. Hideouts have to be tracked down one at a time, and each of the ugly mobsters has to be faced at the end of his own trail. It is a game for one player, and it rewards paying attention to where you are headed as much as to what is in front of you.

Players still enjoy Dick Tracy because it commits to its source: the yellow coat, the heavies with memorable faces, the sense of working a case through a city that does not want to be cleaned up. It is also a good example of how a film of that scale was turned into a console game, and that makes Dick Tracy an easy pick for anyone building a shelf of comic strip and movie adaptations on the Nintendo Entertainment System.
