Disney's Aladdin - for Genesis

Disney's Aladdin is one of the best remembered games on the Sega Genesis, and deservedly so. Published by Sega of America in 1993 and developed by Virgin Games as a co production with Disney, it follows the story of the film: Aladdin fights his way through Agrabah, escapes the Sultan's dungeon, survives the fiery Cave of Wonders, reaches the Genie's Lamp and faces the evil Jafar to save Princess Jasmine. What made Disney's Aladdin stand out at the time was its animation, smooth and expressive enough that playing it felt like watching an animated film.

Aladdin carries a shining scimitar to slash at thieves and desert warriors, and apples to throw at trouble he would rather keep at a distance. He climbs, swings and leaps through hand drawn stages, barely dodges danger on a high speed carpet ride, ping pongs around inside the Genie's Lamp like a pinball, and reaches special bonus rounds by surviving Jafar's troops. Comedy runs through all of it, from palace guards dropping their drawers to camels spitting dirt wads. The soundtrack brings the Academy Award winning music of the film to the Genesis, with A Whole New World and Friend Like Me among the favourites.

Players still love Disney's Aladdin for the way it looks and moves. Every animation has weight and wit, the stages are varied, and a run through it is a pleasure rather than a trial. It is also one of the cartridges most often named when people talk about the Genesis at its best, which makes it a cornerstone of any collection built around the system. Whether you played Disney's Aladdin as a child or are coming to it fresh, it remains a showcase for what the Genesis could do.
