Disney's Beauty and the Beast - Roar of the Beast - for Genesis

Disney's Beauty and the Beast: Roar of the Beast puts you on the other side of the fairy tale, casting you as the Beast rather than the heroine. Developed by Software Creations and published by Sunsoft for the Sega Genesis in 1993, it is a single player platformer that leans into the stormier side of the Disney film. The premise is blunt: unless each battle is won, the Beast stays a Beast forever. That gives Roar of the Beast a heavier mood than most Disney licences of its era, built around a hulking hero who fights with claws and brute strength.

Play runs through side scrolling stages that follow the story's locations. You begin by defending the castle from the creatures, rats and spiders that have crept into its dark and dusty halls, then head outdoors into an icy forest, leaping from tree to tree and branch to branch while packs of wolves hunt you through the snow. Later, angry villagers pillage the castle and you set out to recover the stolen valuables, with Lumiere, Cogsworth and Mrs. Potts lending a hand. It all builds to the castle rooftop and a hand to hand confrontation with Gaston. The Beast's moves are built around his size and reach, trading precise platforming for raw force.

Players still return to Roar of the Beast for that change of perspective and for its atmosphere: snowy woods, candlelit corridors and music that takes the material seriously. It is also a demanding game, the kind of early nineties platformer you learn by pattern rather than breeze through. For collectors, Disney's Beauty and the Beast: Roar of the Beast is a distinctive entry on the Genesis Disney shelf, and anyone assembling a run of licensed Genesis platformers will want this one in the row.
