Disney's Bonkers - for Genesis

Disney's Bonkers brings the animated television series to the Sega Genesis, with Bonkers the bobcat police officer taking on a case of his own. Developed by Sega's Interactive Development Division and published by Sega of America in 1994, this single player action game opens with Bonkers reading in the newspaper that a contest for the best policeman has been announced. His partner is away, so he sees his chance at first prize: catch four famous criminals and the trophy is his. Rather than one long platform adventure, Bonkers is built as a set of short, distinct challenges.

Each criminal is a separate minigame with its own rules. In the first you run across a museum room throwing doughnuts at thieves trying to make off with the valuables. The second has you trapping a criminal in a yard by quickly building a brick wall around him. The third sends you searching crates for hidden clothes before a bomb goes off. The fourth is a top down driving chase. Every minigame also carries its own bonus game, unlocked when you clear three rounds in a row at steadily increasing difficulty, so the loop rewards persistence and quick thinking rather than memorised level layouts.

Bonkers holds up because it is bright, fast and easy to pick up, with the cartoon look and squashy animation that Sega's artists did so well on the Genesis. The variety is its charm: no single challenge overstays its welcome, and the escalating bonus rounds give skilled players a reason to keep going. For collectors, Disney's Bonkers is one of the quieter Disney titles on the console and a good example of a licensed game shaped around its show's humour instead of a generic platform template. On a shelf of Genesis Disney games, Bonkers is the odd, likeable one that visitors always ask about.
