Disney's Toy Story - for Genesis

Disney's Toy Story adapts the first fully computer animated feature film into a Sega Genesis platformer, and it does so with real ambition. Developed by Traveller's Tales and published by Disney Interactive in 1995, it puts you in the boots of Woody as he jumps, swings and drives his way to the end of each level. The headline is the look: Toy Story uses rendered character art to bring the film's computer generated toys onto sixteen bit hardware, and the result was one of the most striking licensed games of the Genesis era.

At heart this is a single player side scrolling platformer. Woody's pull string is his main tool, used like a whip against the enemies that cross his path, from sharks to Mr. Potato Head and Ham. Levels retrace familiar scenes from the movie and mix straightforward platforming with set pieces that change the game up, including swinging sections and driving stages that break from the usual left to right run. After each level you are treated to still images from the film, tying the stages back to the story. Toy Story is also known for being tough, with demanding jumps and little patience for mistakes.

Toy Story is still admired for how much Traveller's Tales squeezed out of the Genesis, and for animation and music that hold up decades later. It is a piece of history too: an early showing from a studio that would go on to define licensed gaming for years, and a snapshot of the moment the first Toy Story film was everywhere. For collectors, Disney's Toy Story is one of the standout Disney releases on the console and a cartridge that looks as good as it plays.
