DOOM II - for GBA

Hell's fury has been unleashed, billions are dead, and the job of saving what is left of humanity falls to one marine with a very large gun. DOOM II on Game Boy Advance is Torus Games' handheld conversion of id Software's record breaking sequel, brought to the system by Activision in 2002. What makes DOOM II stand out here is partly that it exists at all: a full first person shooter, built on speed and wide open floor plans rather than careful corridor crawling, running on a machine most players associated with platformers and puzzle games.

Play is pure momentum. You push through sprawling levels hunting keys and switches, learning where the demons wake and which walls hide a secret stash, then using everything you find on the horde that comes for you. The arsenal grows as you go, and DOOM II's double barreled shotgun is still the best argument ever made for letting a room full of monsters get close. Difficulty settings let you pick between a steady tour and a punishing one, and link cable play opens DOOM II up to four players.

Players still love DOOM II because it set the shape of a whole genre and then refused to age out of it. The pacing, the weapon balance and the level design are still picked apart by people making shooters today, and on a handheld the game turns into something slightly different: a famous bloodbath you can carry in a pocket and play in ten minute bursts. For collectors, DOOM II is one of the Game Boy Advance library's real conversation pieces, a landmark shooter squeezed onto a cartridge, and it sits well on a shelf beside the system's other action games.
