Double Dare - for NES

Double Dare turns one of television's messiest game shows into a Nintendo Entertainment System contest. Developed by Rare and published by GameTek in 1990, it asks the question the show built its name on: do you dare? Quiz games were a rarity on the NES, which makes Double Dare stand out in any run through the console's library. It trades platform jumping for fast thinking and faster reflexes, and it keeps the loud, sticky, family friendly spirit of the show it comes from.

Play centers on two teams answering questions on every subject from rock to rocks. Answer straight if you know it, or pass the risk along and dare the other team to try. Dare them back and the stakes climb, and when nobody wants to commit, the Physical Challenge arrives and the game becomes a test of timing and nerve. Those stunts are where Double Dare earns the double in its name, with obstacles waiting to leave you in a real mess if you misjudge a move. Two players can go head to head, which is how the game is best played.

Players still love Double Dare because it captures something few cartridges even attempted: the noise and the chaos of a television studio. It plays well in short bursts, it works with people who have never held a controller, and it rewards broad general knowledge rather than quick fingers alone. For collectors, Double Dare sits in an interesting corner of the shelf, a licensed game show adaptation from Rare during the years that studio was turning out NES cartridges at a remarkable pace. Add Double Dare to the collection and quiz night can start whenever you like.
