Dragon Fighter is a fighting game made for the Famicom by Flying Star and released in 1996, long after most studios had moved on to newer hardware. It was produced without Nintendo's license, which was common for the small teams still making Famicom cartridges in the middle of the 1990s. Dragon Fighter draws its roster from several well known fighting game series and puts those characters in the same ring, the sort of matchup arcade players argued about but rarely got to play. Seeing it run on eight bit hardware is a large part of the appeal.
The format is the one every fighting game fan knows: pick a character, face an opponent, win the fight. Two players are supported, which is where a game like Dragon Fighter comes to life, with the roster sitting there to be argued over before anyone even starts. What makes it genuinely interesting is the machine underneath. Reproducing fighting game sprites and movement on the Famicom asked a great deal of hardware designed years before the genre existed, and Dragon Fighter is one of the attempts to do exactly that.
Players come to Dragon Fighter out of curiosity and stay for the novelty of a crossover fighting game on a console never meant to hold one. It is quick to pick up, it is endearing in places, and it is the kind of cartridge that gets passed around a room. For collectors, the unlicensed Famicom games of the 1990s are a field of their own, often strange and often ambitious beyond their means, and Dragon Fighter is a fine way into it. Put Dragon Fighter on the shelf as a reminder that the Famicom kept finding new tricks right to the end.
