Dragon Quest Monsters: Caravan Heart is a monster collecting spinoff built by TOSE and published by Enix in 2003, released only in Japan. Following in the footsteps of the Pokémon phenomenon, the Dragon Quest Monsters series sends players across a fantasy world to capture creatures and train them for battle against other monsters. Caravan Heart puts you back in the shoes of prince Kiefer from Dragon Quest VII, hiding from the fallout of another of his famous pranks when the goddess Rubiss whisks him away to the land of Alefgard.
There Kiefer meets a boy named Lewin whose parents have fallen ill, and to cure them with the Ball of Roto and secure his own passage home he takes charge of a monster caravan. That caravan, a line of the series' iconic covered wagons, is your mobile base: you plan monster hunts from it, and traveling with it eats into your food rations. Kiefer can recruit monsters and human companions alike, and party members can take on various jobs. Breeding and merging monsters to produce stronger offspring that inherit their parents' skills has been central to Dragon Quest Monsters from the start, and it drives the long game here too.
Caravan Heart is loved for the shape it gives the familiar monster raising loop. The caravan turns a creature collection game into something closer to a journey with logistics, where rations, route and roster all matter, and the Dragon Quest art and music carry it the rest of the way. The Kiefer connection makes it a treat for anyone who has played Dragon Quest VII. For collectors it is one of those entries you have to go looking for: a Dragon Quest Monsters title that stayed in Japan, and a Game Boy Advance cartridge that fills a real gap in an Enix collection.
