Dragon Warrior II picks the story up generations later. Erdrick the Great defeated the Dragonlord and recovered the ball of light, married Princess Gwaelin and founded the country of Torland, and their descendants ruled in peace until the wicked sorcerer Hargon shattered it. Developed by Chunsoft and published by Enix in 1987 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, Dragon Warrior II is the game that opened the series out. You begin as the Prince of Midenhall, with Erdrick's blood in your veins and a world far wider than the first game's waiting beyond the gate.
The great change is company. Instead of one hero you seek out your own lineage, the Prince of Cannock and the Princess of Moonbrooke, and fight as a party of three, each with their own strengths in combat and magic. Battles are still turn based and chosen from menus, but now you are weighing several spell lists and several pools of hit points at once, and monsters arrive in numbers to match. Beyond the fighting there is a great deal of travel, by land and by sea, and plenty of searching for the people and items that move the story toward Hargon.
Dragon Warrior II is loved by players who want the series at its most demanding. It is bigger and harder than its predecessor, generous with its world and sparing with its hints, and finishing it feels earned rather than handed over. For collectors it is the second chapter of the Dragon Warrior run on the Nintendo Entertainment System and the game where the party, the ships and the scale that came to define the series all appear together for the first time. Set Dragon Warrior II between the first and third games and the shelf tells a story of its own.
