Dragon Warrior III - for NES

Dragon Warrior III is the game the first two were building toward, and it closes the legacy of Erdrick. Developed by Chunsoft and published by Enix in 1988 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, it opens on your sixteenth birthday, with your mother waking you to see the King of Aliahan and the Archfiend Baramos threatening the world your father died trying to protect. Dragon Warrior III is remembered as one of the great leaps forward in console role playing, and for many players it is the high point of the series on eight bit hardware.

You build your own party here. Eight classes are available, Hero, Soldier, Pilgrim, Wizard, Fighter, Merchant, Sage and Goof Off, and you choose the companions who travel at the Hero's side. Characters can change class partway through the game, so the group you started with stays useful for the whole journey. The world runs on day and night, there are over forty castles, towns, villages and shrines to visit, Fight Rings where you can gamble on monster battles, and an expanded arsenal of weapons, armor and spells. Dozens of intricate subplots run alongside the main quest.

Dragon Warrior III is the one players recommend first when somebody asks where to start with the older games, because the freedom to shape a party never gets old and because the later stretch of the quest holds a turn that has stayed famous for decades. It is long, it is well paced, and it rewards curiosity at every step. For collectors, Dragon Warrior III is a cornerstone of the Nintendo Entertainment System library and the proper end of the Erdrick story. A shelf with Dragon Warrior III on it holds one of the finest role playing games of the era.
