Dragon Warrior IV - for NES

Dragon Warrior IV is a role playing adventure developed by Chunsoft and published by Enix for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, and it closes out the series on the console with its most ambitious structure. Rather than following one party from beginning to end, Dragon Warrior IV splits the story into five distinct chapters, each focused on a different protagonist or set of protagonists. The first four are told from the perspective of the Hero's future companions, and the fifth, seen through the Hero's own eyes, brings everyone together as they set out to save the world.

Each chapter works as a complete small adventure with its own cast, towns and dungeons, so you are always learning a new set of strengths before the story moves on. Battles are turn based and fought from the party's point of view, with spells, items and equipment gathered along the way, and once the group finally comes together your companions act on their own according to the battle tactics you set for them. A wagon lets you travel with more allies than you can field at once, so swapping fighters in and out between encounters becomes part of planning for tougher opponents. It is a single player quest, long and steady, built for players who like to settle in.

Players still return to Dragon Warrior IV because those opening chapters give the cast real weight: by the time the group assembles, you already know what each person left behind. The writing is warm, the pacing is generous, and the chapter format makes it easy to pick up in short sittings even though the whole journey is a long one. For collectors, Dragon Warrior IV is a cornerstone of the Nintendo Entertainment System library and one of the finest role playing games on the system, a cartridge that earns its place on the shelf and keeps getting replayed.
