Dragon Wars - for NES

Dragon Wars is a role playing game developed by Kemco and published by Activision for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991, a dense and demanding quest that asks a lot of its players from the very first screen. You and your party have sailed across uncharted seas in search of Dilmun, a legendary paradise where the streets are said to be paved with gold and no one wants for anything. Instead you are arrested at the harbor on suspicion of spellcasting, because King Drake of Phoebus has outlawed magic and left magic users slain or driven into exile. Stripped of everything but your wits, you are sentenced to life in a cesspool called Purgatory, and Dragon Wars begins with your escape.

Getting out of Purgatory with nothing is the first real problem, and the game keeps that spirit throughout. You build a party, spend points on skills and spells, and work past obstacles in more than one way depending on what your characters can actually do. Combat is turn based, exploration carries you across islands, towns and dungeons, and the world holds its secrets closely enough that a notebook makes good company. Meanwhile the enemy islands have threatened to unleash their guardian dragons, the most destructive force in the world, and magic remains your only real salvation.

Dragon Wars is remembered as one of the toughest and most rewarding role playing games on the console, a game that trusts you to think rather than leading you by the hand. Players who grew up with it talk about the moment everything clicks, when a skill you almost skipped opens a path you had walked past a dozen times. For collectors, Dragon Wars is a sought after piece of late era Nintendo Entertainment System history and a fine companion to the bigger name quests already on the shelf.
