Dragon's Fury is a 1991 Sega Genesis release from TechnoSoft, published by Tengen, and it is one of the strangest and best ideas on the system: an adventure game in the format of pinball. Known to many players by its other name, Devil's Crush, it puts you in control of a small silver ball and sets you loose on a tall fantasy table crawling with monsters. Instead of simply racking up points on static bumpers, Dragon's Fury asks you to fight the table, and the table fights back.
The battlefield runs three tiers deep, and your ball travels between them as you play. Monsters can be beaten down with enough hits, points pile up in all sorts of bonuses that trigger when you play with skill, and certain shots open bonus stages built around targets of their own. Scoring is the whole adventure: reach one billion points and Dragon's Fury gives you a fight with the final boss and the ending to the game. Two players can trade turns at chasing that number.
Decades on, Dragon's Fury is still the game people reach for when someone says they do not like pinball. The flippers feel strong, the table is dense with things to hit, and the billion point goal turns a casual game into a campaign. The art is all gargoyles, bone and dark fantasy, and the soundtrack is well loved. For collectors, Dragon's Fury is a TechnoSoft and Tengen release that still turns up on lists of the best Genesis games, and it is one of the few pinball titles that earns a place among action games rather than a corner of its own.
