Dragon's Lair - for NES

Dragon's Lair for the Nintendo Entertainment System was developed by MotiveTime and published by CSG Imagesoft in 1990, and it takes a famous license somewhere unexpected. Where most games bearing the name recreate the hand drawn interactive movie, this Dragon's Lair is a side scrolling platform game, with Dirk the Daring moving, jumping and fighting under your direct control. The quest is the one everybody knows: Princess Daphne is held by the evil dragon Singe, and Dirk is the only one foolish or brave enough to go in after her.

Dirk carries weapons such as knives, axes and fire balls, throwing them at dragons, bats, snakes and the Lizard King, who will happily make off with his gold. Just as much of the game is about footwork, with a great deal of jumping and ducking to survive falling bridges, presses, spikes and holes in the floor. Finishing a stage simply means reaching the end of it alive, which sounds modest until you try. This is a single player game with a reputation for being punishing, and it rewards careful timing and a willingness to learn every hazard by heart.

Dragon's Lair on the Nintendo Entertainment System has become a favorite talking point among players who like their platformers merciless, and there is real satisfaction in clearing a stretch that beat you twenty times before. It also stands as a curiosity, a famous arcade spectacle reimagined as a straightforward action game for the living room. For collectors, Dragon's Lair is an instantly recognizable title in any Nintendo Entertainment System run, a conversation starter and a genuine test of patience for anyone who picks up the controller.
