Dragon's Revenge is the 1993 sequel to Dragon's Fury, developed and published by Tengen for the Sega Genesis. It keeps what made the first game special, fantasy pinball with monsters loose on the table, and builds a new playfield around medieval and dragon graphics. Dragon's Revenge is a direct follow up rather than a rethink, which is exactly what players of the first game wanted from it.
The table stands three screens tall, and each of the three screens has its own pair of flippers at the bottom, so the ball stays in play no matter which part of the table it is on. The table elements are all animated and numerous monsters roam the screen. The object is to hit wandering monsters and certain groups of creatures until a gateway to a sub level opens. Those sub levels are single screen affairs that offer multiball play, and they are the key to scoring high, so skilled players work the main table mainly as a route into them.
Players still love Dragon's Revenge for the same reasons they love its predecessor: it rewards aim, it never sits still, and a good run builds its own momentum. The pair of flippers on every screen is a small design decision with a large effect, since it keeps the game feeling generous instead of punishing. For collectors, Dragon's Revenge is the natural companion to Dragon's Fury and completes the pair on a Genesis shelf, a sequel that deserves to be played rather than simply owned.
