Duke Nukem - Zero Hour - for N64

Duke Nukem: Zero Hour is a Nintendo 64 shooter developed by Eurocom Entertainment Software and published by GT Interactive Software in 1999. It sets gaming's loudest action hero against a time spanning alien invasion, and it stands out as an entry built specifically for Nintendo's console rather than carried across from elsewhere. Played from behind Duke's shoulder, Duke Nukem: Zero Hour keeps the blood, guts and attitude of the series intact while giving the action a wider, more cinematic view.

The campaign runs across more than thirty levels spread over four time eras, so the scenery changes constantly as Duke chases his enemies through history. Over twenty new weapons are on offer, along with awesome new enemies and the steady hail of gags and one liners the character is famous for. Duke Nukem: Zero Hour also packs serious multiplayer, with Teamplay and Deathmatch modes for up to four players on one screen, which made it a regular fixture at sleepovers and in student flats.

Players still return to Duke Nukem: Zero Hour for its mix of a long, varied single player campaign and four player chaos on a single cartridge, a combination the Nintendo 64 did not offer often in this genre. The era hopping structure keeps the adventure fresh, and the writing still raises a laugh. For collectors it is an essential piece of both Duke history and the console's shooter library, a cartridge that sits naturally beside the system's other big name action games and still earns its turn in the controller ports.
