Dynamite Duke - for Genesis

Dynamite Duke reached the Sega Genesis in 1990, a home version of the Seibu Kaihatsu arcade shooter, converted by Hertz and published by Sega of America. The premise is pure late eighties action cinema. A power crazed Colonel and his mutant military are threatening world peace, and Duke is the lone assault force sent to raid their island command and crush the war machine. What makes Dynamite Duke stand out is its point of view: you fight from just behind the hero, looking past his shoulder at a battlefield full of gunmen, tanks and assault helicopters.

Dynamite Duke is a single player game spread across six levels. You sweep a targeting sight over the screen to cut down mutant grunts and vehicles at a distance, using machine guns and bazookas, then switch to raw muscle when an enemy gets close. Those moments turn into short bursts of melee, with elbow bashes, kicks, uppercuts and gunstock smashes. Duke's bionic punch is the signature move, heavy and slow enough that landing it feels like a decision rather than a reflex. Each stage builds toward a tougher opponent, ending with the duel against the Colonel inside his Atomic Reactor stronghold, where he saves one last murderous surprise.

Players keep coming back to Dynamite Duke because it is blunt and physical in a way most shooters are not. There is nothing to manage and nothing to study, only a steady advance and the constant question of whether to shoot or to swing. The view from behind the hero gives the action a weight that flat side views rarely match, and the pacing suits short sessions. For collectors, Dynamite Duke is a tidy piece of the early Genesis library, from the stretch when Sega was bringing arcade machines home as fast as it could, and it sits comfortably beside the console's other muscular action titles.
