Dynamite Headdy - for Genesis

Dynamite Headdy was made by Treasure and published by Sega of America in 1994, by a studio that had already built a reputation for cramming more ideas into a Genesis cartridge than anyone expected. Headdy is a puppet, and the game is staged like a show, with scenery that slides in, drops away and rearranges itself around him while the Dark Demon carries out his devious deeds. What makes Dynamite Headdy stand out is its density. It rarely repeats an idea, and it keeps moving from one bright, strange set piece to the next.

Dynamite Headdy is a single player platformer built around one unusual attack: Headdy throws his own head at enemies and at targets around the stage, then pulls it back. In place of the usual power ups, the game lets you swap your head for different kinds, such as heads that heal you or heads that stick onto walls, which turns your attack into a tool as much as a weapon. You use your head to grab hold of things and haul yourself up onto platforms. Stages are short and varied, and bosses arrive often, each one built around a trick of its own.

Players still love Dynamite Headdy for its personality. It is funny without being soft, and its difficulty is honest: the surprises come fast, but the controls are precise enough that you can answer them. The puppet theater look has aged beautifully, and the music and sprite work hold up beside anything on the console. For collectors, Dynamite Headdy is one of the Genesis platformers people reach for when they want to show what Treasure could do with the hardware, and it makes a natural companion to the studio's other games on the system.
