El Viento came to the Sega Genesis in 1991, developed by Wolf Team and published in North America by Renovation Products. The year in the game is 1928. A cult called the Hastur Group intends to summon the monstrous Hastur to Earth, using the newly built Empire State Building as a sacrificial shrine, and it has hired the gangsters of underworld kingpin Vincente DeMarco to clear the way. Standing against them is Annet, a young sorceress from the mountains of Peru who has harnessed a portion of Hastur's own power and commands the air. El Viento mixes prohibition era New York with cosmic horror.
El Viento is a single player action platform game. Annet fights with a thrown blade that arcs out and returns to her hand, and she calls on her elemental magic when the odds turn against her, which happens often. The battle runs through the speakeasies, factories, streets and sewers of New York against a deadly horde of thugs and assassins, and the stages are broken up by story scenes drawn in an anime style that was unusual on the Genesis in 1991. Bosses are the real test, and learning Annet's spacing and when to spend magic is the heart of the game.
El Viento is remembered above all for its atmosphere. A sorceress from Peru fighting a cult of cosmic horror in jazz age Manhattan is not a setting any other game of the period attempted, and the presentation carries it. The action is brisk, the stages are short enough to learn properly, and Annet remains one of the more distinctive leads on the console. For collectors, El Viento is a sought after Renovation release and the companion piece to Earnest Evans, which makes owning both of them on the Genesis especially satisfying.
