Elevator Action - for NES

Elevator Action is a platform shooter developed by Micronics and published by Taito for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985, a home version of one of Taito's best known arcade cabinets. You play a spy who infiltrates a building filled with elevators, and the job is to collect the secret documents hidden behind its doors and make it out through the bottom. Elevator Action has a simple shape and an unmistakable look: a cutaway building, a lone agent in a trench coat, and a great many doors that might open at any moment.

Each of the thirty floors is a small problem to solve. Enemy agents step out from behind closed doors to shoot at you, and you can take them down, duck away or slip past them, with shooting out the lights as another way to tilt the odds. Elevators and escalators are your routes between floors, and the further down you go the more tangled those systems become, until crossing a single floor turns into a puzzle in itself. Clearing a level means taking every secret document and traversing the building from top to bottom. Two players can take turns, trading the controller after each loss.

Elevator Action is still a pleasure because it moves well and reads instantly: you always know what the building wants from you, even in the second before it all goes wrong. The mix of shooting, climbing and quiet evasion was unusual in 1985 and still feels distinct today. For collectors, Elevator Action is an early Nintendo Entertainment System cartridge with real arcade pedigree, a short sharp game that fits into a spare ten minutes and an obvious keeper for anyone building a Taito shelf.
