ESPN Baseball Tonight - for Genesis

ESPN Baseball Tonight brings the feel of a televised ball game to the Sega Genesis. Developed by Park Place Productions and published by Sony Imagesoft in 1994, it leans on the ESPN broadcast name for its presentation and keeps its focus squarely on the sport itself. The lineup covers 28 real Major League teams, though the rosters are filled with fictional names rather than licensed players. What sets ESPN Baseball Tonight apart on the Genesis is its viewpoint: the action sits behind the batter, so pitching and hitting both play out down the barrel of the plate.

Play begins with a choice of modes. Exhibition games are there for a quick nine innings, while playoff mode asks for a longer run at a title. Practice modes let you work on pitching and batting separately, and Home Run Derby turns the game into a pure swinging contest. A pair of options shapes how forgiving the game feels: errors can be switched on or off, and assisted fielding can be left on for newcomers or turned off by players who want full control. One quirk gives ESPN Baseball Tonight its character, since after a play you throw the ball back to the pitcher yourself before the game moves on. Two players can face off.

Baseball fans keep coming back to ESPN Baseball Tonight for the way its camera puts you in the middle of the duel between pitcher and hitter, a perspective that still feels distinct among Genesis sports titles. The options for errors and fielding assistance mean it can be a relaxed pick up game with a friend or a stricter test of timing and judgement. For collectors, it is a notable piece of the Sony Imagesoft catalogue and of the wave of broadcast branded sports games from the mid 1990s, and it slots neatly beside the rest of a Genesis sports shelf.
