Exile - for Genesis

Exile is an action role playing game developed by Telenet Japan and published in North America by Renovation Products in 1991. It is a sequel to XZR, and it keeps that series' unusual setting: a fictionalized thirteenth century, with the Middle East at its center and journeys that reach into other parts of the world. You play Sadler, an assassin who has just defeated the Caliph and returned home, only to pick up the trail of a Crusader spy. Exile stands apart from most Genesis role playing games for taking its story into real history and religious conflict rather than classic fantasy.

Play moves between two views. Travel and exploration use the overhead perspective familiar from role playing games, while battles and dungeons switch to side scrolling mazes closer to an action game. Sadler fights with swords and casts spells both offensive and restorative, and defeating enemies earns experience, with each level raising his attributes automatically. Towns are where you buy and sell weapons, armor and items between expeditions. The story carries him into an alliance with the leader of the Knights Templar and a search for a holy artifact said to be able to end the religious wars. Exile is a single player game.

Exile has kept a devoted following for its tone and its ambition. The mix of overhead travel and side scrolling dungeon crawling gives it a rhythm of its own, and the subject matter still feels bold for a 1991 console release. Renovation's catalogue is a favorite hunting ground for Genesis collectors, and Exile is one of its most talked about entries, an action role playing game that reads very differently from the fantasy standards of the time. It is a fine pick for anyone building a Genesis library with real depth.
