Exo Squad - for Genesis

Exo Squad is an action game developed by Novotrade Software and published by Playmates Interactive Entertainment in 1995, based on the animated series of the same name. It arrived late in the Genesis lifespan, when developers knew the hardware well, and it shows in the animation, which is smooth and weighty in a way that suits armored combat suits. Exo Squad puts you in the ExoSquad itself, defending humanity in a personalized E-Frame, the walking battle machine that is the show's signature piece of hardware.

Three ExoTroopers are available, and the game offers three styles of play across its five action levels and the fighting stages between them, so a run moves between different kinds of combat instead of settling into one pattern. The most distinctive feature is the cooperative mode, in which two players work together to control a single ship, which turns Exo Squad into a game about coordination rather than competition. It is a genuinely unusual approach to two player design on the Genesis, and it makes the game a good choice for an evening with a patient friend.

Fans of the cartoon keep Exo Squad for the obvious reason: it captures the look of the series and its mech combat. Everyone else keeps it for the cooperative mode and the variety, since few Genesis action games switch styles this freely or ask two people to run one machine together. Released in 1995, it is one of the later Playmates titles for the system, and late releases tend to be harder to come across, which makes Exo Squad a satisfying find for collectors chasing the end of the Genesis era.
