F-117A Stealth Fighter - for NES

F-117A Stealth Fighter is a flight simulator with a strong combat streak, developed and published for the Nintendo Entertainment System by MicroProse Software in 1992. MicroProse built its name on serious simulation, and F-117A Stealth Fighter carries that approach onto the console: you take complete control of a stealth aircraft that enemy base radar can barely detect, so getting home in one piece depends on how you plan an approach rather than on how much you shoot.

Missions drop you into places that were treated as military hot spots in the late 1980s and early 1990s, among them Libya, Israel, Korea and Russia in the final years of the Soviet Union, each with its own targets on the ground and in the air. Your aircraft does not stay the same: equipment builds up as you keep playing, and bonus items hand you extra weapons, including missiles meant for shooting down UFOs that may or may not be terrestrial in origin. Expect to think about radar exposure and weapon choice as much as about reflexes, and the cartridge supports two players.

F-117A Stealth Fighter still appeals because it treats a console player like a pilot rather than a gunner, and because the stealth idea gives every mission a quiet tension that straightforward shooters do not have. The UFO hunting keeps it from ever feeling dry. For collectors, F-117A Stealth Fighter is a fine example of the computer simulation houses trying their hand at the NES, and it belongs on the shelf next to the arcade style flyers it contrasts with so sharply.
