F1 2002 - for GBA

F1 2002 is Magic Pockets' handheld racer for the Game Boy Advance, published by Electronic Arts in 2002 and built on an FIA license: 17 real circuits, 11 teams and 22 named drivers from that season. What sells it in the first corner is the presentation of speed. The framerate stays smooth, the controls stay readable at pace, and F1 2002 manages a genuine sense of velocity on hardware that had every excuse not to.

Underneath, the cars run on physical model settings for tires, aero, gearbox and brakes, with gear ratios, maximum speed, rpm limits and engine curves set per machine, so the teams feel different to drive. Races carry incidents: crashes, withdrawals, engine breakdowns and records falling in real time. The audio engine simulates up to four cars at once, with gear changes, power and Doppler effects as rivals come past. Two difficulty settings, plus adjustable driving assistance and adjustable skill and speed for the other drivers, let you set your own level, and four modes are on offer: Race, Season 2002, Custom Championship and Multiplayer for two players.

Players keep F1 2002 around because it is a complete season racer that fits in a pocket. You can run a single race in a few minutes or take Season 2002 the whole distance, and the handling rewards learning a circuit rather than memorizing one line. It is also a time capsule, a full grid from one particular year preserved on a cartridge. For collectors that is the real appeal. Racing games are a thin part of many Game Boy Advance collections, and F1 2002 is one of the more serious attempts the system saw, worth a place next to the arcade racers.
