Fantasia - for Genesis

Fantasia brings Mickey Mouse into a platform adventure drawn from the Disney film, developed by Infogrames Europe and published by Sega of America in 1991. It was one of the first Disney games to reach the Sega Genesis, and it leans hard on the look and sound of the movie: painted backdrops, orchestral music, and the sorcerer's apprentice himself in robe and hat. The setup is simple. An evil wind has scattered the world's musical notes, and Mickey has to gather them back so the music can play again.

You start in the Master's workroom and move outward through worlds lifted from the film: an ancient jungle where dinosaurs rumble, dangerous seas full of snapping creatures, open space thick with speeding stars, and the fiery slopes of Bald Mountain. Mickey's magic does the heavy lifting. Cast a spell to turn marching brooms and bubbling pots of goo into stardust, hop inside a floating bubble to cross a gap, or bounce off a poisonous mushroom to knock its top off. Spell books, crystal balls and dinosaur eggs scattered through the stages top up his powers. Fantasia is a single player game, and its levels are wide, with notes tucked away for players willing to search.

Fantasia has a reputation among Genesis players as a beautiful game that does not go easy on you. Its stages demand exploration and careful jumping, and finishing it is a genuine accomplishment. That mix of charm and challenge is exactly why it is still talked about, and why it keeps turning up in collections. As an early showcase for what the Genesis could do with color and music, and as a piece of Disney's long history in games, Fantasia holds a spot that no later platformer quite replaced.
