Fatal Fury 2 - for Genesis

Fatal Fury 2 picks up after Geese Howard's defeat and finds the peace short lived. Wolfgang Krauser has called a new tournament, and the Lone Wolves answer, with new faces among them. This Sega Genesis version was developed by Aspect and published by Takara in 1994, and it is a noticeably bigger game than the first: more fighters, more buttons, more freedom in the way a round moves. Fatal Fury 2 is the entry where the series found its shape, and this release puts that step forward in the hands of anyone with the console.

Eight fighters are selectable: Terry Bogard, Andy Bogard, Joe Higashi, Big Bear, Jubei Yamada, Cheng Sinzan, Kim Kaphwan and Mai Shiranui, with four bosses waiting past them. The combat system is more complex than before, spreading attacks across four buttons, which gives light and heavy versions of punches and kicks and a wider set of specials to learn. The two plane battlefield returns, and this time you move freely between foreground and background whenever you like by pressing light punch and light kick together. Underneath all of it the principle has not changed: win the duel with fists and feet. Two players can face each other directly.

Fatal Fury 2 is remembered as the game that made the series a real contender on the fighting game shelf, and its roster has stayed with SNK ever since. Players still like it for the clean feel of its matches and for characters who have never gone out of style. On a Genesis it is also one of the more ambitious conversions of its generation, which gives it a double appeal for collectors: a good fight, and a record of what the console could be pushed to do. Alongside the first Fatal Fury, it completes a pair.
