Fatal Fury - for Genesis

Fatal Fury carries SNK's street fighting series onto the Sega Genesis, developed by SNK and published by Sega Enterprises in 1993. The story is pure arcade: the King of Fighters tournament has been called in South Town, a city run from the top by men who do not lose, and only the toughest entrants will see the end of it. Fatal Fury stood out in its day for the way it staged a fight, with two lanes of combat instead of one and a sky that shifts from day into night as the tournament runs on.

You pick a fighter and work through the field using punches, kicks, throws and special moves. Opponents are not shy about their gifts: some hurl tornadoes or bolts of flame, one changes shape to raise the challenge, and each has a pattern worth learning. The two plane layout lets a fight move between foreground and background, opening up attacks and escapes that a flat arena cannot offer. A two player mode is included for settling things with a friend, and the solo road ends where everyone expects it to, with a long climb through South Town's best to the man waiting at the top.

Fatal Fury matters because it is where Terry Bogard, Andy Bogard and Joe Higashi began, and the series it started ran for many years afterward. Players come back to this version for its pace and its soundtrack, and for the feeling of a fighting game from the moment the genre was still being invented. For a Genesis collection, Fatal Fury is a cornerstone: the console's window onto SNK's half of the fighting game story, sitting naturally beside the sequel that followed it.
