Fester's Quest is an overhead shooter for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed and published by Sunsoft in 1989, and it hands Uncle Fester of the Addams Family the job of stopping an alien invasion. The fate of the whole city rests on him, and nobody is less likely to sit still for that kind of trouble. What makes Fester's Quest stand out is the pairing of a famous television family with Sunsoft at the top of its form: a thick, memorable soundtrack, chunky sprites and a quiet town that turns menacing the moment the shooting starts.
You walk Fester through streets and sewers from above, firing a gun that grows stronger as you find upgrades and swinging a whip at anything that gets close. Early opposition comes from slime replicators, skeeters, globules and giant scorpions, and your health is at stake long before your life is. This is a family affair, so help is at hand: find your way to Thing and he lends a hand of his own, and ring for Lurch when you are in trouble. Alien bosses wait at the end of each stretch, and the worst of them has been saved for last. Fester's Quest is a one player game.
Fester's Quest has a reputation for being hard, and the players who love it love it partly for that and partly for the music, which is some of the finest on the NES. It is a game people keep coming back to in order to settle an old score. For collectors it is a double draw, a licensed Addams Family cartridge and a Sunsoft release from the studio's best years, so Fester's Quest earns its place on the shelf twice over.
