Fire Emblem - for GBA

Fire Emblem for the Game Boy Advance, released in 2003, is the game that introduced this long running series to players outside Japan, developed by Intelligent Systems and published by Nintendo. It is a strategy game for one player, set on the continent of Elibe, and it follows three young lords, Lyn, Eliwood and Hector, through a long campaign of chapter sized battles. Fire Emblem was built to be a welcome: it teaches its systems patiently before it begins testing you on them.

Each battle is a grid. You take your turn, the enemy takes theirs, and the whole thing hinges on where you choose to stand. Classes have their own reach and movement, a weapon triangle means swords, axes and lances each answer one another, and units who fight side by side build bonds that turn into conversations and small advantages in the field. The hard rule is the famous one: a unit who falls is gone for good, so every risky move is a real decision rather than something to shrug off.

Fire Emblem earns its following with exactly that tension. A battle you nearly lost but held together feels like something you did, and the cast makes you care about keeping everyone alive to see the next chapter. It is beautifully presented too: crisp sprites, bold combat animations and a score people still quote. Players who came to the series later keep returning to this one because it is the cleanest introduction it has, firm but fair. For collectors, Fire Emblem is a landmark Game Boy Advance cartridge, the start of the series in English and an essential part of any strategy collection.
